The first time you launch it, two sticky notes appear with instructions on how to use the app. The app is found, of course, in the Mac Applications folder. If you’re not familiar with Stickies, don’t worry – I’ll give you a quick overview of how the app works. Today I’ll show you how to use Stickies to keep yourself organized while working on your Mac. Like the name implies, the Stickies app allows you to create virtual “sticky notes” that are small and can be “stuck” to your screen just as if you wrote something on a real 3M Post-It™ and put it on your Mac’s screen. You don’t need to download it because it comes with macOS. You can also change Preferences for all notes in the main application settings.There’s one default Mac app that I’m sure not many Mac users even know about – the Stickies app. To change the color or transparency for a note, you can right-click and choose Note Settings or use the Ctrl+P shortcut (for keyboard ninjas ) If the built-in Vista sticky notes don’t float your boat or you are still using XP, there’s an easy to use open-source application called Stickies for Windows which works in both Vista as well as XP, and unlike the Vista version has a tray icon that you can use. This can be very useful for keeping a sticky note on your desktop without being too noticeable until you mouse over it, or if you use the Always on Top option you can keep it in front of all the applications but still be able to see through to whatever is behind it.

Notice how this note is partially transparent… If you right-click on the title area of the note, you can also access the Opacity menu, where you can make the sticky notes transparent until you move your mouse over them.
